Macrophage binding was carried out in microtiter wells containing either the parental strain (ORN115) or a fimH205 mutant strain (ORN183) each mixed with a fimH′-kan insertion mutant strain (ORN204) as described in the text. The degree to which αmm inhibited binding of the parent or fimH205 mutant (ordinate values) was calculated from the change in ratio of these strains normalized to the change exhibited by the fimH′-kan insertion mutant. A value of 1 (dashed line) defines the value expected if there was no effect of αmm addition. Results presented are the averages of three separate experiments, each performed in duplicate.
