Schematic of study design. On the day prior to surgery, patients were infused with OTL38, a folate receptor-targeted near-infrared contrast agent that has been used in previous trials of intraoperative molecular imaging during video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS-IMI) given known overexpression of folate receptor alpha in pulmonary cancers. On the day of surgery, localization of the lesion was attempted sequentially using white-light thoracoscopy, then IMI during robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RIMI), and then confirmed with VATS-IMI as a control group. Fluorescence was evaluated on the back table following resection and then confirmed on a microscopic level postoperatively. RATS, robotic-assisted thoracic surgery.
