NLs in excitatory synapse. Neuroligin–neurexin interactions can affect the synaptic abundance of NMDAR, which in turn affects NMDAR-mediated synaptic transmission. They also affect the targeted release of glutamate, which is closely related to the efficiency of glutamate use. Postsynaptic NL1 can be phosphorylated by CaMKII and thus regulate synaptic plasticity
