FIG. 1

The proposed degradation pathway of vanillate and syringate via the PCA 4,5-cleavage pathway in S. paucimobilis SYK-6. LigA and LigB, the small and large subunits of PCA 4,5-dioxygenase (4,5-PCD) (22); LigH, a gene product essential for vanillate and syringate O-demethylations (21); LigC, CHMS dehydrogenase (Masai et al., submitted); LigI, PDC hydrolase (19); LigJ, OMA hydratase (this study). The PCA 4,5-cleavage pathway is illustrated according to findings from previous studies (1115, 19, 22). The degradation pathway for syringate indicated by a dashed line was suggested on the basis of the results obtained in this and a previous (4) study.
