Overview of techniques to generate acellular human lung scaffolds for modelling lung disease, repair and regeneration. Acellular scaffolds may be obtained from normal or diseased human lungs using either perfusion or immersion based decellularisation. Following successful decellularisation, cells may be reseeded into whole lungs or lobes, seeded into small three-dimensional (3D) segments, or seeded onto thin slices. Recellularised small 3D segments may be left intact or further processed into thin slices. Alternatively, extracellular matrix (ECM) may be extracted from acellular human lung tissue and used to coat cell culture dishes.
