Mechanisms to maintain tissues through youth. Several maintenance programs contribute to maintain a youthful soma minimizing the propagation of non‐functional or non‐cooperating cells. These include: genetic, cellular, and structural redundancy; cell intrinsic programs such as DNA repair, apoptosis, and senescence; immune surveillance; tissue‐intrinsic mechanisms such as cell competition and the phenotype normalization of cells with malignant potential by peer pressure.
