Schematic illustration of the modulation of cell adhesion behavior on reversible self-assembled monolayers (rSAMs) functionalized with a GRGDS peptide ligand. i. Incubation of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) or 10-mercaptodecanesulfonic acid (MDSA) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) in pH 8 HEPES buffer solution containing varying mole fractions, χ, of GRGDS 3 in filler 1 or 2, χ_GRGDS3 = 0–0.25, followed by rinsing with pH 8 HEPES buffer. ii. Seeding of 3T3 fibroblasts on the rSAM surface. iii. Incubation for 5 hours. iv. Molecular exchange of GRGDS 3 with Filler 2 and complete cell detachment.
