Fungal adhesion and germination on a polystyrene substrate. Fungal cells (1 × 106) were incubated at 37 °C in a 24-well polystyrene plate containing RPMI medium. The wells were washed, and then the total adhered cell numbers per field after 4 h of incubation and the percentage of conidial germination at 4, 8 and 12 h were determined using the inverted microscope. Asterisks represent statistical significance (p < 0.05). Images show fungal cells adhered to polystyrene after 12 h of germination. Inset: conidial cells before the adhesion process.
