A proposed working model of the role of the MdSUVH–MdDNAJ complex–MdRFNR1 module in the drought stress response in apple. Drought stress induces the expression of MdSUVH1, MdSUVH3, MdDNAJ1, and MdDNAJ2. The encoded proteins form a DNA methylation reader complex that binds to methylated MITE-MdRF1 in the MdRFNR1-1 promoter, thereby improving the expression of MdRFNR1-1. MdRFNR1-1 is responsible for redox balance by catalyzing the conversion of NADPH to NADP+ and promoting POD and CAT activities, leading to enhanced ROS removal, thereby playing a positive role in drought tolerance.
