(A) Molecular structure of hemoglobin (PDB ID: 1BZ1), which comprises ∼80% α-helices and is highly water-soluble in cytosol. (B) Molecular structure of G protein-coupled receptors (metabotropic glutamate receptor 1 bound to an allosteric modulator, PDB ID: 4OR2), which comprise ∼50–80% α-helices and are water insoluble. The side chain chemical properties of amino acids on these α-helices determine the proteins water solubility.
