In insulin-resistant individuals, hepatic ERK activation transmits sensory signals to the central nervous system through the afferent splanchnic nerves, which in turn reach the pancreas via vagal nerves. Vagal factors induce islet β-cell proliferation to secrete more insulin through activation of the FoxM1 pathway.
