Nigericin inhibits vaccinia virus replication in several human cell lines. Confluent HeLa (A), A549 (B) and Huh7 (C) cells in 6-well plates were treated with or without 0.2 or 2 μM nigericin and infected with vaccinia virus (strain Copenhagen) at an MOI of 0.1. Virus titres were determined at 5 and 24 hpi by plaque assays on BHK21 cells. (D) HeLa cells in 6-well plates were treated with or without 0.2 or 2 μM nigericin and infected with myxoma virus at an MOI of 0.1. Virus titres were determined at 5 and 24 hpi by plaque assays on RK13 cells. All results are representative of three independent experiments. Error bars represent the standard error of the mean.
