Profiles of somatic copy number alterations (sCNA) in (A) tumour and (B) leukoplakia showed a higher proportion of chromosomal arm‐level alterations in tumours. Seven chromosomal arms (7p and q, 8p, 10p, 19p and q and 20q) were amplified/deleted in a significantly higher proportion in tumours than in the potentially malignant lesions. (C) Among individuals with leukoplakia but without cancer, the proportion of chromosomal arm‐level alterations in the leukoplakia tissue was less. Our analysis showed that sCNAs occur late during the development of malignancy.
