Percentages of CD4+ (a) or CD8+ (b) cells expressing different surface molecules in peripheral blood from HIV-negative controls in comparison with individuals with less than 2 years of HIV-1 infection and CD4+ counts of more than 500/μl (early infection), those with more than 8 years without symptoms and CD4+ counts above 500/μl (nonprogressors [NP]), and those who have progressed to AIDS (progressors [P]). The results are presented as box plots: the limits of the boxes represent the 25th and 75th percentiles.
