It is those in wheelchairs who, of course, are the easiest to isolate in the rooms. We have had many discussions about this. It is heartbreaking because many of them do not understand it. So, we cannot lock them inside and lock the door, although it easy to physical manage it |
Heartbreaking to see them miss visits |
To keep the residents in their rooms |
Turning the Nursing home into a prison |
The group that had COVID-19 infection were not allowed to open the door and go out into the sensory garden outside the ward. There were many discussions in the nursing home because there was a fear that the patients from our ward could go out into the sensory garden and enter the other side of the building. Suddenly, there were huge metal fences that you would have at concerts outside. It looked like a prison |
You can see that many of the residents really miss having visits, so it is difficult |
Restraining order—hard and sad |
It is hard to look at their loneliness. It has become a big ethical challenge. We are not allowed to sit and hold their hands with skin contact and nor take off our masks |
Loneliness of residents |
The ward is a large open space with four groups and a big corridor that crosses in between. It is therefore not possible to separate the groups physically because only two fire doors can be closed, and it was the other two groups that could not be separated with the fire door that had COVID-19 infection |
Inhibiting architecture |
Constrained and locked ward |
It has been challenging when patients are quarantined in a nursing home with a community living room and corridors because not all patients can be kept in their private rooms |
Having to quarantine residents who want to go out and who do not understand why they must be in the room, has been a huge challenge and almost impossible |
Not to go outside |
It is sad to see that everyone is suffering (patients and relatives) while we are trying to take care of themselves, and the residents do not understand the situation. It is not fun to see them become completely silent |
