Ribosome heterogeneity in nature. (A) Heterogeneity derived from genome or ribonuclease-mediated divergent rRNA sequences and its modifications can result in different types of ribosomes. (B) Specialised ribosomes also can originate from variations in RPs, including RP paralogs, RP stoichiometry, and PTM of RPs. (C) Unique interactions with ribosome-associated factors, such as RACK1 or FMRP, generate specialised ribosomes in nature.
