A comparison of exercise preconditioning versus sedentary hearts exposed to ischemia-reperfusion injury. Myocardial injury during an ischemic insult is proportional to the ischemic duration. Levels of injury are progressive and include electrical abnormalities, declines in ventricular pump function, and tissue death through necrotic and apoptotic mechanisms.
