Loss of RARα in Western diet-fed Ldlr-/- mice promotes foam cell formation by suppressing cholesterol efflux to HDL and ApoA-I. Rarαfl/flLdlr-/- and RarαMac-/-Ldlr-/- mice were fed a Western diet for 16 weeks. The levels of intracellular lipids (A) and proteins (B,C) in peritoneal macrophages were determined (n = 3–4). Macrophage cholesterol efflux to HDL (D) or ApoA-I (E) was determined (n = 6). In (C–E), ordinary two-way ANOVA with Tukey’s multiple comparisons test was used for statistical analysis.
