Clinical outcome of C. jejuni-infected mice upon butyrate treatment. Following gut microbiota depletion, IL-10^−/− mice were challenged with C. jejuni strain 81–176 by oral gavage on days 0 and 1. Starting from day 2 p.i., the animals were subjected to butyrate (BUT) or placebo (PLC) via the autoclaved tap water ad libitum. Naive mice served as uninfected and untreated controls.
