Clinical outcome of C. jejuni-infected mice upon butyrate treatment. Following gut microbiota depletion, IL-10−/− mice were challenged with C. jejuni strain 81–176 by oral gavage on days 0 and 1. Starting from day 2 p.i., the animals were subjected to butyrate (BUT) or placebo (PLC) via the autoclaved tap water ad libitum. Naive mice served as uninfected and untreated controls. (A) The overall clinical outcome was quantitated in all animals on day 6 p.i. with a clinical scoring system by adding scores of distinct parameters including (B) wasting, (C) diarrhea, and (D) fecal blood.
