The integral symbol indicates the brain integrating the value of sucrose sensory inputs over time to build an internal expectation signal. The “f()” block represents the process by which the brain converts [sucrose] to value. The internal expectation value signal is compared to the value of the current substrate to create a relative value signal. The comparison is diagrammed as a subtraction, but other comparison operations are possible. The relative value signal regulates a rise to threshold process in the oviDNs to drive egg laying.
