Place cell recordings in multiple large environments

(A) Schematic of the four environments (A, B, C, and D), illustrating their relative sizes (cm) and positions in the experimental room. Each environment was distinguished by a set of unique cues (Figure S1A).

(B) Rats foraged in all environments during the recording session— environment A twice, at the start and end of the session, interleaved with the other three in random order. Recording duration scaled linearly with environment area.

(C–E) Waveforms (scale bars, 0.5 ms and 100 μV), auto-correlogram (maximum lag 500 ms), and rate maps for a typical place cell with activity in all environments (bin size 4 cm). Distinct place fields are delineated with lines of different color (see Figure S1B for details on field detection). The color map for each plot scales from 0 Hz to the peak rate above each map. Unvisited bins are white.
