Effects of butyrate in ameliorating allergic asthma. Allergic asthma is associated with sensitization to aeroallergens such as air pollution, bacteria, pollen, and viruses. Exposure to the allergen induces airway epithelial injury, triggering an inflammatory response with enhanced cytokine production and, consequently, airway hyper-responsiveness, narrowing, and mucus hyperplasia. Butyrate produced in the gut reaches the lungs through the bloodstream and regulates inflammatory cells through histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibition, thus attenuating asthmatic symptoms and pulmonary damage.
