Δipcs⁻promastigotes are fully virulent in susceptible mice. 10⁵ purified metacyclic parasites were inoculated into the footpad of Balb/C mice and the lesion size measured. Data from a representative experiment is shown, with the average and SD for groups of four mice; simple linear regression determined significantly different slopes between groups (p < 0.0001); combined data from four separate experiments show similar trends and are provided in Fig. S5A.
