Overview of the PMF-dependent potentiating effect of metabolites on aminoglycoside susceptibility in bacteria. Highlighted metabolites in bold have been demonstrated to increase susceptibility to aminoglycosides via increased drug uptake. This is hypothesised to be via increasing flux through central carbon metabolism leading to increased NADH production, increased respiration rate and a consequent increase in the PMF. Aminoglycoside uptake has been shown to be directly related to the electrical potential component of the PMF. AMG aminoglycoside; G-3-P, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate; PMF proton-motive force; NDH, NADH dehydrogenase; Q, ubiquinone; QH2, ubiquinol
