Table 2.

Proportions of heavy water detected in drainage water

O/H trees H/O trees
Drainage water from upper chamber Heavy hydrogen water fraction (τH, %) 7.6 ± 2.0 41.5 ± 3.1
Heavy oxygen water fraction (τO, %) 47.9 ± 0.4 4.3 ± 0.2
Natural water fraction (100 − τH − τO, %) 44.6 ± 2.0 54.2 ± 3.2
Drainage water from ground chamber Heavy hydrogen water fraction (τH, %) 35.6 ± 7.1 0.01 ± 0.00
Heavy oxygen water fraction (τO, %) 0.09 ± 0.02 28.3 ± 4.3
Natural water fraction (100 − τH–τO, %) 64.4 ± 7.2 71.7 ± 4.3

O/H trees were labelled by spraying the needles with heavy oxygen water and watering the soil with heavy hydrogen water. H/O trees were labelled by spraying the needles with heavy hydrogen water and watering the soil with heavy oxygen water. The presence of natural water and both heavy waters in the upper chamber drainage water indicates bidirectional exchange between water on leaf/shoot surfaces and water inside the leaf.
