S. aureus Wright was transformed with each isogenic cna clone and examined by quantitative collagen binding assay using cells taken from exponentially growing cultures (A) and from post-exponential-phase cultures (B and C). (D) Results obtained when the cells used in the collagen binding assay were harvested from Columbia agar. Results of 125I-collagen binding assays are reported as disintegrations per minute (dpm).
