Effects of intrahippocampal infusions of DAB (1,4-dideoxy-1,4-imino-d-aribinitol) on memory in a spontaneous alternation task. DAB blocks the breakdown of glycogen in astrocytes. Consistent with the model in Figure 6, the impairment produced by inhibition of glycogenolysis can be rescued by coinfusion of glucose or lactate, which can act downstream from glycogenolysis to regulate memory processing.
