^aThe MAbs or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) was administered intraperitoneally 18 h before challenge. The mice were then challenged with 1 ml of a meningococcal suspension containing 4% mucin and 1.6% hemoglobin. The meningococcal strains 608B and 164B were adjusted to 1,500 and 1,000 CFU/ml, respectively, and 1 ml of the bacterial suspension was injected intraperitoneally into each mouse.
