Figure depicts the impact of synaptic transmission blockade on the rapidity of homeostatic plasticity. While classical experiments relying on activity blockade (via blockade of voltage-gated Na+ channels or postsynaptic AMPA receptors) demonstrated a slow process that occurs over days, block of synaptic NMDA receptor facilitates plasticity down to hours or less.
