Low-dose E2 inhibits calpain activity in microglia (A), astroglia (B), macrophages (C), and fibroblast (D) cells. BV-2 microglia, C6 astroglia, Raw264.7 macrophages, and M1 fibroblast cells were treated with either 40 ng/mL IFN-γ or 40 ng/mL IFN-γ + 40 nM E2 overnight. Calpain activity was tested in 100 μg of protein from each group and determined by Calpain-Glo Protease Assay Kit (G8501) according to the manufacturer’s protocol. *p < 0.05; control vs. IFN-γ, IFN-γ vs. IFN-γ + E2. ns = not significant.
