Coding tree for qualitative data analysis in this study. Codes were applied to data acquired through surveys, interviews, identity artifacts, and significant circles. Data were open coded (left column) for components of student identity, degree/career intentions, and statements about the research experience. These codes were then assigned to categories that drew connections between open codes (i.e., axial coding; middle column). Axial codes were then used to identify emergent themes (right column). This study used member checking, coauthor discussion, and code occurrence across data types to ensure validity and reliability (gray box).
