Code Definition Example
Experiences on platform Instances that would apply to “renege negativity,” where the participant describes anecdotes or specific encounters they have been in or have seen on the platform. But my favorite thing is when people that I admire leave me a comment. Like yesterday someone I really love… left a comment and my friends were like, “Oh my God” (Theo)
“I’d say the most common and biggest negative experience that I have on social medias is on Tumblr because there’s so many people on Tumblr. People will frequently… I’ll say something that they disagree with, and then I will start getting anonymous hate, or I’ll start getting anonymous triggering messages or threats or different things like that.”
(Tony)
Engagement level Instances that would apply to “engaging in equilibrium”. It’s just a good way to interact with my friends and sometimes on Tik Tok I make my own posts and they get pretty popular, which is kind of nice that people are relating to the content I post and I guess learning more about people like me, like information that I didn’t really have before. (Payton)
And I mentioned that I only really use Twitter to follow my favorite podcast. I like to read the tweets of the cast members of that. (Adora)
People on platform Instances that would apply to “real allies”. Who the participants interacts with, follows, or has added on the platform. Specifically Facebook and Reddit, both have a pretty big group aspect for me. So it’s just kind of a bunch of people congregating in one place that all enjoy a certain topic or all talk about the same thing. Yeah, I guess usually it has to do with geographical location or hobbies like board games or video games, or things like that. (Emily)
Frequency Instances that would apply to “limit screentime and frequency”. How often the participant accesses the platform. But I haven’t used it in months because I just became consumed with school and stuff. And I just didn’t have the time to post on it anymore. (Dustin)
Community on platform Participant mentions specific groups of people that they interact with on the platform. If you didn’t have accepting parents, you’re just kind of screwed. My parents blocked a lot of the internet for most of my growing up. Tumblr got through the cracks, and I learned a lot then. Then they found out about it and blocked it. I lost a big community thing. (Elliot)
Support on platform Participant discusses support and support seeking on platform. Before I went and started talking to a therapist and so, I just kind of would tell my friends on Discord and stuff about all the things I was feeling. They would assure me and stuff like that. (Cyrus)
Lgbtq + related content Participant mentions to what degree that they are out on the platform. “In some places, yes. I have certain people blocked off of Instagram and Snapchat stories who just don’t see my posts about such things.” (Alexi)
Well at first, I was new to this whole community thing and I wasn’t sure of where I would be and if I would be welcomed, you know? So I joined a couple groups on Facebook and such like that to connect with other people who are in the community and kind of get to know what it’s all about. (Allie)
“I don’t necessarily… I sometimes do engage with LGBTQ content, but I enjoy hearing other people like that. Some of that stuff is really interesting hearing about LGBTQ rights such like that.” (Dustin)
“I’m known for only posting fic about characters being trans, because that’s how I roll.” (Theo)
Number of accounts on platform Participant mentions having more than one, or deleting account(s) on platform. I used to use alt accounts on Facebook particularly. So those are just accounts that don’t have my real name or pictures of me usually, but they’re just a place that I could connect with people that I knew that my family wouldn’t find. That kind of thing. (Emily)
Education/finding information Participant uses platform for educational purposes, regardless of topic. Twitter is mainly to keep up with political news. That’s what I use it for. (Alexi)
Privacy What information the participant includes about themselves on the platform. Does not include whether the participant is out on this platform or not. “For that, I use real photos of myself on Reddit and Facebook. I do not use my real name on Reddit or YouTube. I only use it on Facebook. And, in terms of searchability, the only one I’m confident I can be searched using my actual information is my Facebook profile.”
(Paul)
“So I am very active on my, well not very active, but very personal on my Instagram. It is a public page. Anyone could find it. I sort of monitor who follows it by blocking anyone that makes me uncomfortable. But other than that, it’s completely public.” (Tony)
Feelings about platform Opinions on the platform as a whole. “There’s nothing worth sharing on Facebook.” (Elliot)
