Biomarkers are expressed as median and inter-quartile range (IQR: Q1–Q3).

CD74 and CX3CR1 are expressed as relative expression to HPRT1.

*Student’s t-test (or the Mann–Whitney t-test when distribution was not normal or Welch test when homoscedasticity was rejected) were performed to compare two hospital arms groups.

**Anova test was performed to compare biomarkers levels between the three groups.

p value was considered significant ≤ 0.05.

CD74, HLA class II histocompatibility antigen gamma chain; CX3CR1; CX3C chemokine receptor 1; IL, Interleukin; PCT, procalcitonin.
