Table 5. The main changes seen in the oral cavity of patients with dementia are:

• Poor hygiene
• Gingivitis with accumulation of bacterial plaque, calculi, and bleeding
• Caries
• Fractures with remaining roots and eventual infection
• Ulcers, gingival hyperplasia, and lack of taste due to psychotropic drugs often used to control symptoms in these patients.
