The QS propeptide is encoded immediately upstream or downstream of the RRNPPA gene. When the propetide encodes a single peptide pheromone, the mature QS pheromone (located at the C-terminal region of the propeptide) is created by an N-terminal cut performed by the signal peptidase (SP) and exported by the SEC translocon. Mature QS pheromone is internalized by the oligopeptide permease (OPP); cytoplasmic pheromone can bind to the RRNPPA receptor, modulating its function.
