Dr E Wesley Ely, MD, MPH is a Professor of Medicine and Critical Care and co-director of the Critical Illness, Brain Dysfunction, and Survivorship (CIBS) Center, where there are numerous ongoing COVID-19 studies related to the acquisition of brain disorders including acquired dementia and mental health sequelae of long-hauler syndrome from SARS-CoV-2 infection. This Essay is one of the stories to be included in Dr Ely's upcoming book about the evolution of humanism in critical care entitled “Every Deep-Drawn Breath” with Scribner for autumn, 2021.
