A meta-analysis of multiple trials of anti-resorptive treatments for osteoporosis demonstrated a strong (R2 = 0.73) correlation between absolute amount of increase in total hip bone density (BMD) and odds ratio of reduction in risk of hip fracture. This established change in BMD as a valid surrogate marker for the effect of treatment on risk of fracture
