Survival rates of mice challenged with P. gingivalis W83 (●) and M1217 (○). Female BALB/c mice (five mice per group) were subcutaneously injected with 0.1 ml of bacterial suspension (3 × 10¹¹ CFU/ml) of P. gingivalis at two sites on the depilated dorsal surface (0.2 ml per mouse). The survival rate in each group was calculated as the number of survivors/the total number of mice. Data are the mean survival rate ± standard error of three different experiments. On days 4 and 5 after injection, the values were significantly higher for M1217 than for W83. ∗, P = 0.01 (Student's t test).
