What is already known on the topic:
  • Vaccine registers are key to monitoring vaccination programmes, though in England there is no interoperable register to monitor vaccine coverage delivered in multiple settings.

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic there was a need for all countries to rapidly deliver vaccines in a timely manner and use information available on vaccines delivered to estimate vaccine coverage, vaccine effectiveness and vaccine safety.

What this study added to our knowledge:
  • We describe how the National Immunisation Management System was created in England to collect information on COVID-19 vaccines delivered and how the data was used to evaluate vaccine coverage, effectiveness, and safety and describe how the data was validated

  • Our results explain how a vaccine register can be quickly implemented to monitor vaccines delivered across multiple settings and that is interoperable with other surveillance data essential for public health response.
