Fig. 1 — Brain regions of the same color contribute to the same subtype of apathy. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and the right anterior insula (AI) comprise the salience network (SN), which monitors switches between internal and external attention and facilitates motivation and decision-making. The dACC connects to the ventral, dorsal, and medial-motor networks, and dysfunction of the dACC can contribute to each subtype of apathy.
