Sample stimuli used in Experiment 3. In Experiment 3, we tested whether older adults were particularly impaired in emotion perception when the lower half of the face was obscured with a face mask, and whether a transparent mouth mask was particularly beneficial for older adults. In the examples shown: the no mask condition depicts disgust; the clear mouth mask, happiness; and the full mask, fear. Stimuli from Experiment 3 were adapted from the FACES database described by Ebner et al. (2010) and were presented in color during the task.
