HUVEC were stimulated with either a sham preparation of spirochetes or B. burgdorferi (10 bacteria/endothelial cell) for 24 h. Increasing numbers of T lymphocytes were subsequently added and allowed to incubate for 4 h. Data points represent the means ± standard deviations (error bars) of three to four replicate samples. Data shown are representative of two separate experiments. The number of T lymphocytes that migrated across B. burgdorferi-activated endothelium is significantly greater than the number that migrated across sham-treated controls at all points tested (P < 0.05).
