Desaturation definition and parameters. (a) Hypoxic burden for each relative or absolute desaturation definition (see supplementary information and Figure S2). The hypoxic burden was defined as the sum of desaturation areas normalised by recording duration. The hypoxic burden was based on relative or absolute threshold and was measured under oxygen support, mechanical ventilation or without support in critical and non-critical patients. (b) Desaturation characteristics for critical and non-critical patients with or without oxygen or mechanical support. The results are shown for an absolute desaturation threshold of 93%. The number of desaturations per hour, the depth the area and the desaturation time (duration between the beginning and the minimum) are represented for each group. *** Wilcoxon test p value < 0.001,** p value < 0.01,* p value < 0.05, NS non-significant.
