Chest X-ray image of a patient after three weeks of treatment with nanocrystalline silver solutions prepared as described in the Methods section (with further details in the Supplementary Materials). The chest X-ray is of a 41 year old renal transplant patient on chronic immunosuppressive treatment. This patient had used inhaled nanocrystalline silver solutions for pulmonary issues on several prior occasions over the previous two years to prevent the development of resistance to antibiotics, should the need arise. The patient developed an upper respiratory infection and had been treated for three weeks at the time of the chest X-rays shown. Purulent secretions resolved within 72 h of treatment, but a persistent cough lingered initially. By the time of the X-ray, the cough had also ceased. There is no evidence of silver deposition in the lungs.
