Serovar Typhimurium type 1 fimbriae increase M-cell disruption by serovar Gallinarum. Approximately 4 × 109 serovar Gallinarum bacteria transformed with either vector alone (A) or pISF156 (B) were grown under fimbria-inducing conditions and were used to inoculate BALB/C ligated ileal loops. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine M cells (denoted by arrows) in the Peyer's patch tissue. Magnification is 1,000-fold.
