In response to IL-1R activation by IL-1β, β-cells increase the abundance of Icam1 mRNA. This transcriptional activity requires recruitment of the NF-κB p65 transcriptional subunit, histone chemical modifications, and occupancy of RNA polymerase II at sites within the proximal Icam1 gene promoter.
