Flow of metabolites in compression-induced metabolic production of aspartate and glutamine. Network synthesis of aspartate and glutamine is accomplished via glutamate synthase (GLTsy) and the tandem action of ASal (adenylsuccinate lyase and adenylosuccinate synthetase isozyme 1). Synthesis of glutamine is aided by the action of the malic enzyme (AP2), which recycles the NADP+ produced by GLTsy into the NADPH required by GLTsy.
