Overview of the RootDetector system. The main component is a semantic segmentation network based on the U-Net architecture. The root length is estimated by skeletonizing the segmentation output and applying the formula introduced by Kimura et al.¹⁷. During training only, a weight map puts more emphasis on fine roots.
