Antigen-induced proliferation (counts per minute) was divided by proliferation in the absence of antigen to obtain a stimulation index. The cross-hatched area represents the mean value plus 3 SD for 20 healthy control subjects. The bar indicates the mean value of patients' responses. The values were slightly greater in convalescent-phase samples than in acute-phase samples, but the differences were statistically significant only for FlaB (P = 0.01).
