Hematoxylin-and-eosin-stained sections from infected tissues. Mice were injected as described in the legend to Fig. 2, with the strains indicated (see Fig. 2). Two mice were randomly chosen from each infected group at various times after injection. After each mouse was killed, the infected limb was exposed by blunt dissection, allowing observation of the severity and spread of necrosis. Samples of the muscle were then removed and fixed overnight in a solution of 0.5% tannic acid (wt/vol) in methanol before paraffin embedding and sectioning for hematoxylin and eosin staining and analysis.
